Summary

The medical exam required for applications for permanent residence is now valid without expiration.

On April 4, 2024, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that I-693 medical examination reports will no longer expire. Effective immediately, the results of these mandatory medical exams required for many immigration applications will remain valid indefinitely.

What is an I-693 Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record?

The I-693 Medical Report is a mandatory form required for many different types of immigration applications. The purpose of the I-693 is to certify that the applicant does not have any medical conditions that would make them inadmissible to the United States.

What applications require an I-693 Medical Report?

Submitting a completed and valid I-693 is a crucial requirement for several immigration applications, but the most common application is the Form I-485 Application for Adjustment of Status, otherwise known as an application for legal permanent residency or “green card.”

How Does This Change Impact Applicants?

Previously, the I-693 medical exam was only valid for 2 years from the date it was completed. This meant that if an applicant’s I-693 was more than 2 years old when filing an immigration application, they would need to undergo a new medical exam at additional cost and time. The elimination of the expiration date is welcome news for many immigration applicants. Some of the benefits of this new policy include:

– There is no longer a need to rush to file an immigration application before the I-693 expires

– For applicants who have already undergone the medical exam but haven’t yet filed their immigration application, they no longer have to worry about the I-693 becoming invalid

– The policy change reduces the administrative burden and costs associated with having to repeat the medical exam, which can cost hundreds of dollars
