If you’ve heard about Real ID and have questions about what it is, you’re not alone. With the May 7, 2025, deadline approaching, travelers across the country are wondering what these requirements mean for them. Whether you’re planning a vacation, a business trip, or simply want to stay compliant with federal guidelines, understanding Real ID is crucial. Below, we’ll break it all down for you.

What Is Real ID and Why Does It Matter?

Real ID is a federal law that sets minimum security standards for state-issued identification, such as driver’s licenses and ID cards. Its purpose is to enhance the reliability of these credentials, making it more difficult for them to be fraudulently used. A Real ID will eventually be required for certain federal activities, such as boarding domestic flights and accessing secure federal facilities.

The Real ID Act was passed back in 2005 in response to recommendations from the 9/11 Commission to improve national security. Despite its importance, implementation has faced numerous delays, leading to confusion. But with the deadline nearing, now is the time to ensure you’re prepared.

What Documents Qualify as a Real ID?

Not every ID in your wallet will meet the Real ID standards. A compliant credential is typically marked by a gold or black star in the upper corner of the ID. If your state-issued driver’s license or ID carries this mark, you’re set. However, not all credentials meet these guidelines.

For example:

  • Compliant Documents: Most standard state-issued IDs for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, asylees, and refugees are Real ID compliant. Colorado, for instance, issues non-marked licenses for these groups that qualify.
  • Non-Compliant Documents: Some state-issued IDs, like Colorado’s “marked” licenses, do not meet Real ID standards. These include IDs issued to individuals who are temporarily lawfully present or unlawfully present in the U.S.
  • Other Forms of ID: Real ID only applies to state-issued IDs, so documents such as U.S. passports, Employment Authorization Documents (EADs), foreign passports, and consular IDs are not impacted by this law.

If you’re unsure whether your ID complies with Real ID, states now offer resources to help you verify, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has an online tool for checking credentials.

How to Obtain a Real ID

If your current ID doesn’t meet Real ID standards, the process for obtaining one is straightforward:

  1. Check Your State’s Requirements: Each state has a set of documents you need to bring. Commonly required items include proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), proof of Social Security number, and proof of residency.
  2. Visit Your DMV: Compliant IDs are issued at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Be prepared for in-person verification.
  3. Complete the Application: Follow your state’s steps to apply. Fees may vary depending on where you live.

The Deadline and What it Means

The current deadline for Real ID compliance is May 7, 2025. After this date, travelers without a Real ID-compliant credential may face difficulties boarding domestic flights or accessing restricted federal facilities. While past deadlines have been extended, it’s best not to rely on another postponement. Acting now can save you stress later.

If you find yourself traveling after the deadline without a Real ID, know that TSA has processes to work around this. For example, travelers may complete an identity verification procedure, though it requires extra time and security screening, so plan ahead.
