On March 31 of this year, former President Trump’s Proclamation 10052 expired. This proclamation had previously barred many nonimmigrants from entering the United States under the pretense that their presence in the country would hamper the economic recovery due to COVID-19. Not only did this action hurt many businesses by cutting off a stream of necessary and skilled workers, but it also hurt many families by unnecessarily separating them.
At the time, the Justice Action Center said:
“According to the White House’s own estimates, [the proclamation] will block approximately 525,000 people from entering the United States. […] It will prevent approximately 20,000 employers from bringing needed workers into the United States.”
The cumulative effect of the proclamation was that it worked against American interests by destabilizing businesses and individual lives during a period which called for stability and support for hurting industries.
Many businesses, prospective U.S.-bound workers, and immigrant advocates can breathe a sigh of relief now that the Biden administration has allowed this ban to expire.
